Factors that can contribute to dandruff

Around 50% of the adult population will suffer with dandruff in their lifetime.

Dandruff is caused when the cycle of skin renewal speeds up, leaving patches of dead skin forming on the scalp, leading to white flakes in the hair. There are many factors, both internal and external that can contribute to dandruff and make it worse. These include:

The Environment

Environmental factors such as air pollution and low humidity can cause our skin to become aggravated, which can often make dandruff worse.

Wearing Hats

In the winter we naturally want to keep warm but wearing a hat can cause the scalp to sweat and create the perfect breeding conditions for malassezia furfur, a yeast-like fungus that causes dandruff.

Weakened Physical Resistance

Certain illnesses can weaken our immune system, which can make us more prone to dandruff. Those who suffer with Parkinson's may be more likely to have dandruff.

Allergies

If you have used hair products that contain ingredients you are allergic to it can increase dryness and itching on your scalp which could contribute to a dandruff flare-up.

Hair Products

Excessive use of beauty products such as heavily perfumed shampoos or conditioners, hair sprays and mousses can cause our scalps to become irritated.

Stress

Stress can contribute to dandruff flare-ups and make dandruff worse.

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal changes that can occur during puberty (increased sebum production) can play a part in a flare-up of dandruff.

Skin Conditions

Conditions that affect the skin, such as dermatitis or eczema can cause your scalp to become dry, itchy and scaly which can contribute to dandruff.
